Think Juicing Is Healthy? Here’s What Science Says

5 glasses of fruit juices for juicing cleanse

Sarah had tried every juice cleanse under the sun—pineapple detox, celery challenge, you name it. But instead of shedding pounds and gaining clarity, she found herself bloated, irritable, starving, and swearing off fruit altogether.

Sound familiar?

Juice cleanses might promise a magical reset, but new research reveals they could be doing more harm than good.

Why juicing falls short for your health

Juicing strips away essential nutrients your body needs and can disrupt your gut, fuel inflammation, and even mess with your energy levels.

Here’s what the science reveals:

  • False promises: Marketed as a way to “detox” your body and boost energy, juice cleanses often lead to fatigue, bloating, and cravings.
  • Fiber deprivation: Juicing removes insoluble fiber, critical for gut health. Without it, your digestion slows, gut bacteria suffer, and blood sugar spikes. Plus, without fiber, your body doesn’t utilize certain nutrients as effectively, reducing the benefits you think you’re getting.
  • Inflammation risks: High-sugar juices feed inflammatory bacteria in both your gut and mouth, increasing bloating, discomfort, and cognitive decline.
  • Oral health disruptions: Juices can disturb the delicate balance of your oral microbiome, creating an environment for harmful bacteria linked to systemic inflammation and even cardiovascular risks.

The detox myth

Many people turn to juice cleanses believing they’ll help “detox” the body and boost health. But here’s the truth: your body already has a built-in detox system. Your liver and kidneys are designed to naturally filter and remove toxins, making expensive juice cleanses unnecessary.

Instead of restricting your food by juice cleansing, focus on nourishing these organs so they can do the work for you!

While fruit juices may seem like a healthy choice, sugar is still sugar. When juice lacks fiber, the natural sugars from fruit hit your bloodstream rapidly, leading to spikes and crashes in blood sugar levels. This can leave you feeling tired, irritable, and craving more sugar—not exactly the energy reset you were hoping for.

Another common misconception is that removing fiber makes nutrients more accessible. In reality, fiber plays a crucial role in supporting gut health, hormone balance, and blood sugar stability. Without it, your digestive system and metabolism can suffer, and certain nutrients may not be absorbed as effectively.

That “glow” some people report after a juice cleanse? It’s often just a temporary result of water loss and calorie deprivation—not true health gains. Sustainable wellness requires balance, not restrictive fads.

That said, there are rare cases where juices can be useful—such as for individuals with Crohn’s or colitis who struggle to digest fiber. But for most people, blending or eating whole fruits and vegetables is the better choice for long-term health.

Feed your gut, Fuel your health

Forget the fads — real, lasting health comes from making sustainable choices that nourish your body from the inside out. Science shows that prioritizing whole foods and balanced nutrition is the key to supporting your gut, hormones, and overall well-being.

Start by choosing whole, fiber-rich foods whenever possible. Eating fruits and vegetables in their natural form helps feed your gut bacteria, supporting smoother digestion and better energy regulation. Fiber is essential for keeping blood sugar levels stable and maintaining a healthy gut.

If you love convenient options, opt for smoothies instead of juices. Blending retains the fiber that’s stripped away during juicing. Boost the nutrient content by adding gut-friendly ingredients like flaxseeds or chia for a dose of healthy fats and extra fiber.

Balance is everything. Instead of restrictive juice fasts, aim for plant-forward meals that include proteins, healthy fats, and plenty of fiber. This approach provides your body with the nutrients it needs for sustained energy and vitality.

Finally, be mindful of your sugar intake. Most juice cleanses rely heavily on fruit, which can cause rapid blood sugar spikes followed by energy crashes (if juiced, whole fruit is great!). Instead, prioritize veggies juices like cucumber and celery (and read ingredient label to make sure it’s mostly veggie and not just apple plus a drop of veggies!).
