Optimize Gut Health and Hormone Balance with 12/12 Fasting
I often speak to clients who want to jump straight away into really complicated or specific protocols, supplement regimens, or specific foods, but they really forget about some important foundational habits. I have clients come to me reading five books at once and just overwhelming themselves. I always say if you just take a step back and look at building these foundational habits, then you will get so much and feel better in a much simpler way.
What holds them back and maybe holds you back is overthinking and overcomplicating the process which could lead to overeating.
So, let’s break it down and keep it simple, get you on your way from the start line, and create momentum for success.
Habit 1: 12/12 Fasting for Gut and Hormone Health
The timing of your meals matters as much as what’s on your plate. Think of a 12-hour overnight fast as hitting the reset button for your gut and hormones. This natural tune-up time allows your digestive system to make repairs and your hormones (like cortisol, insulin, and melatonin) to reset.
Here’s a simple rule: Finish dinner by 8 PM and have breakfast at 8 AM, giving you a 12-hour fasting window. This isn’t just about better sleep; it’s about improved digestion, metabolism, and fat-burning. It’s essential to stop eating a couple of hours before bedtime to let your body rest and repair.
Pro tip: Instead of late-night snacks, enjoy water or tea while winding down after dinner. This aligns your eating schedule with your body’s natural rhythm for optimal digestion and hormone balance.
Challenge: If you’re up for it, gradually work towards a 16-hour fast with an 8-hour eating window. However, adapt slowly and pay attention to how your body responds.
Remember: Fasting can feel great, but don’t overdo it. For those in their fertile years, stick to the 12/12 daily fasting routine and occasionally extend it. Longer fasts might not be suitable for everyone.
